Somali Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs have been highly fragmented, inadequate, and irrelevant, lacking a linkage between vocational programs and general education. In recent years, a few TVET programs have been established in Somaliland, Puntland, Galmudug, and Banadir. However, the current TVET curriculum is not producing graduates with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for entry into the workforce. This is due to The insufficient number of competent teachers, a lack of necessary instructional materials and equipment, and a lack of public awareness.
Probakaal can assist the government in establishing a robust TVET system with a well-designed curriculum, effective pedagogy, and appropriate assessment methods. This system can:
- Contribute significantly to economic development
- Help eradicate violence and extremism, and reduce unemployment rates by equipping young people with employable technical skills, and
- Support the implementation and monitoring of regular program activities related to TVET.
Every year, thousands of students complete secondary school, and many graduate from universities with few skills and little prospect of securing employment. Probakaal can empower and support TVET programs that reduce chronic youth unemployment, which currently stands at about 70% across the country, and contribute to the economic growth of the nation.
There is also a large number of marginalized and out-of-school students, as well as unemployed young people, who do not have access to formal educational opportunities or cannot afford to attend college. We can help transform the TVET system in Somalia to better respond to labour market demands, address youth unemployment, and tackle gender disparities.
Probakaal can ensure program and donor visibility and public recognition by carrying out regular communication activities, including drafting media pieces, posts, and human interest or success stories, and contributing to the development of other media products such as short videos for social media platforms and op-eds.
Finally, we believe that vocational training has the potential to bridge the unemployment gap in Somalia, serve as a catalyst for economic growth, and create a skilled workforce that drives innovation and progress.
