Climate change

Climate change is a complex and interconnected global issue that spans multiple disciplines. In Somalia, climate plays a critical role in the economy and livelihoods, with agriculture and livestock account for 65% of the GDP and employment in 2019. The largest compoent of the Somali GDP is still livestock, followed by agriculture . The impacts of climate  change are creating a ‘new normal’ in Somalia—characterized by increasingly arid landscapes, unstable water and food supplies, and climate-induced displacement. Droughts and floods, exacerbated by climate change, pose the most severe hazards to the country.

Probakaal brings expertise in climate financing, partnerships, and resource mobilization in Somalia, linking regional and global efforts to local needs. In collaboration with government counterparts, Probakaal can develop and produce innovative, cost-effective climate change and environmental designs using local materials. We also compile and update a list of best practices in climate change, environmental management, and building design.

Probakaal systematically pursues climate finance opportunities—including global climate funds, bilateral agreements, and private sector investments—by establishing partnerships with relevant focal points and potential collaborators. We develop concept notes and proposals for fundraising aimed at climate change adaptation and mitigation and support the expansion of green energy use.

Probakaal identifies potential entry points for climate adaptation at the household and institutional levels, promotes climate and environmental awareness in school programs, and drives innovation in water and wastewater treatment and management. We also support climate-resilient water safety planning and address water scarcity issues.

Furthermore, Probakaal engages in the development of climate-resilient health and food security systems and addresses the added burden of disease due to climate change. We support the incorporation of national climate and environmental vulnerability assessments into social safety systems.

Probakaal facilitates the dissemination of evidence and raises awareness about the impact of climate change on children’s rights in Somalia, helping to implement programs and build the capacity of stakeholders. We share information and experiences, identify new strategies, and take action to accelerate and improve the delivery of services toward achieving the goals of the Climate, Energy, and Environment program.

Finally, we ensure consistent follow-up on Climate, Energy, and Environment activities through regular site visits, technical meetings, progress monitoring, and adherence to norms, standards, and timelines.
